Curated by Andrew Bracey (Detail) is a site-specific exhibition that responds to the unique space at H Project Space, Bangkok. The site-specific nature of the project will then be broken apart and represented as the exhibition is brought from Thailand to Transition gallery in London. There will be 118 painters in the exhibition who will all contribute a detail of a piece of work. Seen en mass the different artworks will become like a huge collage and connections between the details of the artworks will be made, both in the installation of the pieces in the space and by the viewer as they look around the in the space.

Garageland - Issue XVI (Machines)

The machines theme of issue XVI, coincides with A Machine Aesthetic and is guest edited by the exhibition curators Eric Butcher and Simón Granell. It includes submissions from many of the exhibiting artists. In this issue Eric Butcher and Simón Granell explain some of the ideas behind their project which have been expanded upon by the regular Garageland editorial team.

Bildwerke

Published 12 November 2013

Publication Launch

Bildwerke is a 66 page hardback book published by Galerie Robert Drees, Hannover, with an introductory essay by Harald Krämer, of the same title. A limited edition version is also available with a hand embossed dust jacket made by the artist.

"Every intervention, whether a stripping away of colour, a pause in the act or a mistake in the material, remains visible in the finished surface. This history of origin leads to an organic alliance of colour, resin and aluminium. It bears equal witness to the acts of addition and subtraction. It records decisions which originated in the interplay of feeling and reason, calculus and coincidence. It is this vividness, a warmth which results from the acceptance of error and chance in his methodology which distinguishes Eric Butcher's work; a characteristic which the coldly designed aluminium construction kits of a Donald Judd, for example, completely lack.

A Machine Aesthetic

Published 8 November 2013

Group show

A Machine Aesthetic is a curatorial project by Eric Butcher and Simón Granell, a national touring exhibition taking place in Newcastle, Bournemouth, Lincoln, Norwich and concluding at Transition Gallery, London.

09 Dec 13 – 13 Jan 14  Gallery North, Northumbria University, Newcastle
31 Jan 14 – 29 Feb 14  The Gallery, Arts University Bournemouth
05 Mar 14 – 04 Apr 14  Project Space Plus, University of Lincoln
16 Sep 14 – 18 Oct 14  The Gallery, Norwich University of the Arts
24 Oct 14 – 16 Nov 14  Transition Gallery, London

Exhibiting Artists:

Andrew Bracey, Eric Butcher, David Connearn, Robert Currie, Paul Goodfellow, Simón Granell, Emma Hart, Dan Hays, Natasha Kidd, Tim Knowles, Michael Roberts.

From the first daubings of pre-historic caves, through the invention of the camera obscura and ready-made oil paint in tubes to the use of digital media, artists have been among the first to embrace and exploit new technologies. The focus of A Machine Aesthetic, however, is at once narrower and broader, concerning itself specifically with the notion and implications of 'mechanisation' in its widest sense in contemporary art.

Since the late 1950/early 60s there have evolved a plethora of artistic practices that involve the manufacture of machines to produce the artistic 'product'. Where Jean Tinguely led the way, artists as diverse as Rebecca Horn, Chris Burden, Roxy Paine and Damien Hirst followed. These analyses have tended to conceive of the machine in a narrow sense. A Machine Aesthetic proposes a more illuminating perspective, achieved by consideration of the full range of artistic practices that embrace both subtle and sophisticated notions of mechanisation.

Toomey Tourell is pleased to announce an exhibition of paper works by six British artists. It's title: The Devil Finds Work for Idle Hands refers to the often repetitive and painstaking creative practices of the artists involved, practices highlighted by an intensely physical or manual interaction with the material of paper.

'Paper works' is normally a term used to denote works on paper such as drawings, provisional studies, gouache and so on; often where the physical fact of the support is of nominal importance, or backgrounded. In such work, paper is used for the sake of convenience, cheapness or immediacy rather than for any more fundamental quality of the material.

Curated by one of the participating artists, Eric Butcher, this show brings together a group of artists for whom the material structure and qualities of paper are a more fundamental consideration, and the exploitation of these characteristics provide a crucial part of the driving force of the work. Less 'works on paper' than 'works with paper'.

ReGroup brings together four artists who have worked and exhibited with one another in different guises over a number of years, but who have never before shown together as a single group. At the heart of their work is a focus on the creative process itself, rather than the resultant object.

Each artist has a distinct approach, with his own rules of engagement in the act of creation. As occasional collaborators over the years they have seen how their separate practices have developed, which has subtly, or dramatically shifted their own tragetory. Yet their approach remains personal and specific. 'ReGroup' provides them with a unique opportunity to gain a consolidated view, and reappraise the relationships between themselves and their work.

RAW looks at the use of different materials being used in the practice of contemporary artists in a way that clearly embraces the material. The majority of the work has some, if not total, abstraction which directs the viewer to the surface rather than being distracted by a literal narrative. Each artist embraces the constraints of their chosen material, celebrating the raw, natural marks and working with the material, not just on it.

Material Witness

Published 2 November 2010

Publication Launch

Material Witness is an 84 page book documenting the period of Eric Butcher's residency at Benson-Sedgwick Engineering in 2008/10. With text by Roy Exley, Eric Butcher & the Aluminium Works, Material Witness is published by the Centre for Art International Research, Liverpool and distributed by Cornerhouse Publications ISBN 978-0-9557360-4-9.

"Art does not seek to describe but to enact". Charles Olson.

There is something extremely seductive about the mint-bright surfaces of freshly fabricated metal, there is a decidedly haptic attraction about them, and we feel a certain compulsion to touch them.

Aluminium is no exception. The miniature corrugations, stripes
and irregularities that narrate the story and express the nature of the production processes also dictate, guided, gliding along the corruga- tions, the smoothness of feel, an illusion.

Roy Exley
