Born in Singapore, 1970, Eric Butcher moved to England in 1974. Through studying fine art, a preoccupation with the problems of aesthetics developed which eventually took him to Cambridge University where he read philosophy. Since graduating from Corpus Christi College in 1994 he has exhibited extensively in the UK and internationally with shows in Germany, Italy, Australia and the USA.

In 2001 he completed an MA in Fine Art at Wimbledon School of Art for which he received an AHRB Postgraduate Scholarship. In addition he has received awards from The Arts Council, England, Wimbledon School of Art and the Art Institute at Bournemouth. In 2007 he received an AIB Research Fellowship and was the Centre for Art International Research/Liverpool School of Art ‘Multiple Perspectives’ Fellow.

Butcher’s artistic practice also embraces curating, initiating several exhibitions and projects, including Emission (2001), Definite Article (2005/6) and Underground (2007). Through 2008/10 he developed Material Witness, a project that evolved out of being Artist in Residence at Benson-Sedgwick Engineering in Dagenham, incorporating exhibitions and a publication.

Eric Butcher currently lives and works in Oxfordshire, England.
